Tents are available in many sizes and types. The two main shape types are cabin and dome. Cabin type tents are very family friendly and make it much easier to go in and out with ease. Dome style tents are much more sturdy for windy or crazy weather events.

There are also some other things that are nice to have when you go camping. These are things that you should carry with you to help you camp with confidence and ease. They are extra stakes and anchors, broom and dustpan, inside/outside floor mat, tent repair kit, seam sealer, utility cord and a ventilation fan. These extras will ensure that you have maximum comfort and repair ability while camping. It is better to be safe than sorry.

What to Look for When Choosing a Tent?

Characteristics that you should consider when choosing the best 8 person tent. These are features that improve your camping experience and comfort. My personal preferences are as follows:

  • Weather proof material: staying dry is of paramount importance to the camper. Make sure that the tent will be able to withstand the weather at your chosen camp location. If used for multiple camping seasons, must withstand snowfall and retain warmth. The thickness of the material will be a clue.
  • Stitching quality: Seam stability to ensure there are no leaks or tears.
  • Ventilation possibilities: Windows or vents with covers to allow ventilation even in rain.
  • Entrance cover and/or screened in porch: extra room to allow your sleeping quarters to remain clean.
  • Electrical outlet access either standard or available port: either additional lighting or availability to purchase additional lighting and electrical possibilities.
  • Interior loops for lighting and pockets for storage are a must.
  • Exterior loops for attaching guy lines for extra stability.
  • Ease of installation by one person: ability for pitching the tent with only one person. Should take no longer than 30 minutes for one person.
  • The number of potential sleepers should be at least 2 more than current party number.
  • Carry the weight of the tent. Should be a reasonable weight for one person to carry to site.
  • The footprint of the floor: should cover the whole floor of the tent and may be included or separate.
  • Availability of tent accessories to make my camping experience more enjoyable.
  • Availability of extra poles and stakes for greater stability of the tent.
  • Style of the tent (cabin or dome) depending on where and when you will be camping.

A huge tent! Measures 17' X 10' with a 72" center height. This tent is big enough to have a party in the 3 separate rooms. Weathertec system guarantees it won't leak, and there are Cool Air Ports and Variflo adjustable ventilation system that allows you to adjust the air flow.

This huge tent fits 8 full-sized adults and 12 little girl's sleeping bags. I used it for a birthday slumber party at the lake, and it is a wonderful tent. The girls really liked it!

  • Sleeps 8 persons with ease.
  • Measures 17' X 10' X 72" of center height
  • Exclusive Weathertec System will keep you dry no matter what the weather does.
  • Cool air port and Variflo adjustable venting system allow you to adjust the air flow.

Cons

  • Some people have expressed concerns regarding the setup. It seems to be harder than they thought it should be. I put the tent up myself and it took 30 minutes.
  • Some consumers had concerns about the ventilation. They felt that there was not enough air flow due to the fact there are no large windows.

Our Rating:

This tent is perfect for 8 small adults or 2 adults and 2 large children and we have. They need more room than normal people for some odd reason. The weather proof material and double staked corners proved to be excellent in the wind and rain. I can set this tent up myself in 25 (the first time).

Probably won't take me more than 20 the next time. Must have a screened in room in the front you can use for a living area or extra bedroom. I advise the living room to keep your bedroom clean. Great buy!

Pros

  • 8-person family dome tent with attached screen room.
  • Made of weather resistant polyester and polyurethane coating
  • Full mesh roof option – double stack power corners for stability
  • Cool air port and Variflo adjustable venting system allow you to adjust the air flow.
  • Screen room functions as a sun room or second sleeping room.

Cons

  • Screens on windows do not zip all the way to the top.
  • Experienced some problems with poles breaking – need better return policy

Our Rating:

This tent is very nicely designed. I particularly like the slanted windows that prevent the rain from entering the tent even when the windows are down This tent has a hinged door and a rain fly door protector. This keeps the rain out of the tent when you go in and out. It also has an electrical access port to bring your technology into the tent with you.

This is the greatest tent I ever bought. The design is well thought out and it's very good camping gear!

Pros

  • A cabin designed with specially angled windows that keep the rain out even when they are open.
  • Great for family car campers, scout leaders, and extended camping trips
  • Has electrical access port to bring technology inside the tent.
  • The hinged door that closes with velcro and a zipper.
  • Door awning to protect from rain and the sun.
  • Elite version has LED lighting included.

Cons

  • Walls are steep so be sure to use the guide wires. The Wind tends to blow around.
  • Takes more than one person to setup due to the odd shape.
  • Pole elastic tends to wear out quickly

Our Rating:

This is one of my favorite tents. It is roomy and has a fully screened-in porch to keep the bugs out. It has 4 very big windows that allow for maximum ventilation. I have problems with most tents because they do not have enough windows for air. If you plan to camp in 90-degree weather, it is imperative to have air. This tent is built to last season after season and I believe that it will. Very happy with this purchase.

Pros

  • Fully screened front porch to keep out bugs and rain.
  • 4 large windows for maximum ventilation.
  • Designed for easy setup, mesh roof to let in more sunlight.
  • Weathertec System guaranteed to keep you dry.

Cons

  • Stitching was sewn into the screen and had to be torn open.
  • Wouldn't fold up and fit into its original bag. Just had to put into a trash bag for the trip home.
  • The floor cover at the front door just simply holds the water and makes mud.

Our Rating:

If camping with a group is your thing, this tent is for you. Will sleep 9-10 people, has one door and 3 windows for comfort during the trip, mosquito mesh, covered mesh vents for even more ventilation and much more. This is the Cadillac of tents and I cannot recommend it more highly. Will make a pro camper out of you whether you are or not! Your friends will be envious.

Pros

  • Spacious tent with 1 roomy door and 3 windows
  • Full coverage rainfly.
  • NANO-FLEX shock corded fiber glass rods with improved diameter and double gold-plated ferrules. Mosquito mesh.
  • Heavy duty floor design with enhanced unique element barrier.

Cons

  • Poles not sturdy enough. Broke on the first night out.
  • Tent material not heavy enough to withstand small rocks.
  • Quality not as expected.

These are the cream of the crop of the best 8 person tents and you will be very happy to use any one of them. They are all made of a Weathertec System material to keep you dry, all are easily pitched, some even come with LED lighting for your camping pleasure.
